Equal Participation in Human-Animal Interactions in Design

Team: Sena Cucumak and Özge Subaşı

This work based on Animal-Computer Interaction (ACI) field in order to research and design equally with nonhuman animals beyond human-centrism. As a first step to study with nonhuman animals properly, a systematic literature review in the scope of nonhuman animals’ equal inclusion and participation has been performed [1]. Our unique contribution is conducting a holistic review of equal participation methodologies for animals from various animal-inclusive and equity-oriented research fields by carrying out a systematic literature review and thematic analysis of these methods in order to identify pinpoints for researchers and practitioners designing with animals in ACI and HCI communities.

The outcomes of the first phase of equal participation of animals topic are planned to be applied to an empirical research conducted with caregivers and stray animals (e.g. cats, dogs, birds) in local neighborhoods in order to build up something meaningful to nonhuman animals who are significant others in urban life.
