Disabled and Design Researcher: An Unexpected Relationship?

Team: Zeynep Yıldız, Özge Subaşı
Timeframe: 2020

This ongoing project aims to start a conversation about building socially accessible design research environments to help disabled design researchers equally benefit from the environment. We introduce an initial self-ethnographic account on how disability is physically and socially lived indesign research related environments such as a design lab, a conference, a design research process and through a variety of digital instances. Through analysis and constructive comparison of formal documentation, individual documentation and recall of important instances from a disabled researcher’s experiences in design research for 2.5 years, we seek ways to understand how design labs and design research practices could be built in more inclusive ways.
